Glasgow LEZ Start Date

Glasgow city council have set a range of clean air and air monitoring initiatives.

Phase 1

  • Phase 1 was initially for buses and large transport vehicles across Glasgow city centre.
  • This was introduced in December 2018 and is still in effect today.

Phase 2

  • All vehicles will now follow set emission standards outlined by Glasgow city council (except mopes and motorbikes)
  • Now in operation, Glasgow city council will enforce the phase from 1 June 2023.

However, if you are a resident and your vehicle is registered within the Glasgow LEZ, exemptions will apply in June 2023.

Vehicle Checker Tool For Glasgow's LEZ

Glasgow’s Low emission zone will follow the same standards set by clean air Scotland. The current emission standards are.

  •  Euro 4 – This is for petrol cars and vans registered from January 2006.
  • Euro 6 – Cars and vans registered from 2015 (Diesel)
  • Euro 4 and Euro 6 Standards for Light goods vehicles and HGVs.

Glasgow Low Emission Zone Map And Location

The boundaries of the Glasgow low emission zone were heavily criticised initially.

However, these were due for multiple consultations from the Glasgow city council in the interest of public health and wellbeing.

Glasgow’s low emission zone will include the whole city centre. Other popular areas include

  • The river Clyde to the south (including Clyde street Broomielaw.
  • Saltmarket, Castle Street and High street will also be included as they run from the east.
  • The Glasgow LEZ will incorporate a boundary from the M8 corridor from the north and west side.

Low Emission Zone Fines In Glasgow: What To Expect

Although the highest fine you can receive is capped at £960 (for buses and HGV’s) and £480 for cars and vans, it’s important to realise you cannot escape being charged.

Glasgow city council have invested in a range of high-tech ANPR technology, which will constantly analyse vehicles that enter and drive within the Glasgow low emission zone.

With the cost of low emission zone fines, ensure you outweigh the drawbacks of keeping a non-compliant vehicle long term.

A standardised rate of charges will be applied to all vehicles that do not comply with Glasgow’s low-emission zone. This is set at £60 a day to enter and drive across the LEZ for 24 hours.

The charge can be reduced by half, down to £30, if paid within 30 days.

Otherwise, fines can soon start to amount. Within 90 days, this can double up, and you could be charged upwards of £480 (depending on vehicle type)

Grants & Funding In The Glasgow LEZ

Live or own a business within 20km of the Glasgow LEZ?

You may be in luck!

Glasgow city council have worked incredibly hard to secure funding for grants that residents and micro-businesses can use.

These include:

  • £2000 can be granted to residents to remove their polluting vehicles with an Authorised treatment facility.
  • Up to £1,000 in the form of a ‘Travel Better’ Grant – To be used only for electric bikes, shared car travel memberships, and bus passes.

Businesses can also receive £2,000 for businesses with nine or fewer full-time employees and sole traders.

For certain grants, you must ensure you are eligible!

To receive the £2,000 grant, you must dispose of your vehicle with an authorised treatment facility in Glasgow and have completed and received a response from your application before disposal.

    For residents, there is a one-year grace period (till June 2024) although, for any other non-compliant vehicle, you will be charged regardless.

  • What grants are available to residents in the Glasgow LEZ?

    Residents & can receive up to £2,000 to find a sustainable alternative to their polluting vehicle. 

    However, you must recycle your vehicle with an authorised treatment facility in Glasgow and ensure your application has been approved before this.

    For households within the Glasgow LEZ, you can receive a ‘Travel Better’ voucher for up to £1000; you can use that for bus passes, car sharing or the purchase of an e-bike.
