The Aberdeen low emission zone is now up and running!
Initially launched in May 2022, the scheme has been undertaken as part of Scotland’s low emissions campaign to reduce harmful pollution within the city.
Dangerous levels of NO2 have been present across key cities in Scotland that, include Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dundee.
Our complete guide explains the Low Emission zone, where it starts and ends, what you’ll pay, and available grants (and requirements) to residents and businesses.

Final LEZ Scheme
Internal and external stakeholders drafted a final scheme of the Aberdeen low-emission zone.
The area will include the areas within the town centre with the most pollution.
Following suit of other cities in Scotland, there are two main exceptions for those within the Aberdeen low emission zone. These are categorised as national and local exemptions.
Local Exemptions:
Locally, all residents are to receive a one year grace period from the launch of the scheme in May 2022.
A retrofit scheme was also offered to businesses in Aberdeen under the BEAR fund. This was to support business owners in the transition to low-emission fleet management.
National Exemptions:
As standard, you are exempt from being charged in Aberdeens low emission zone if:
Fines for driving a polluting vehicle in Aberdeen’s clean air zone can soon add up rapidly.
If breached, you can expect to pay upwards of £480!
This has been capped at £960 for buses and HGVs.
As per, ANPR technology will close monitor the boundaries in the Aberdeen low emission zone.
£60, reduced by half if paid within 30 days.
Certain funding has been made to residents within the Aberdeen clean air zone. You must reside within 20km of the LEZ. Households can receive up to £1000 as a ‘Travel Better’ incentive for alternatives such as e-bikes.
This includes a one-year grace period alongside a £2,000 grant that residents in the zone can use.
It is important to note that to be eligible for the grant, you must complete an application and also have your non-polluting vehicles scrapped.
This can only be undertaken by an authorised treatment facility like Scrap Local’s trusted recyclers in Aberdeen!
It is estimated that, by 2024, 86% of cars, 70% of Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs), 93% of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and all taxis in Aberdeen will be compliant with the LEZ. This means that these vehicles can continue travelling within the LEZ without penalty.
