Frequently Asked Questions: Working at Local Recycling Group

Thinking about joining our team? We’ve answered some of the questions we’re asked most often about working at Local Recycling Group, from working hours and holidays to our company culture and what to expect on a typical day. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, feel free to get in touch with our team.

Do you offer remote or hybrid working?

No. All of our roles are based on-site at our Darwen headquarters.

As a fast-paced vehicle recycling business, communication and teamwork are essential, and working together in person creates the best environment for both our employees and customers.

Whether you’re based in the office or out in the yard, you’ll be part of a close-knit team working towards the same goals.

Our standard holiday allowance is 28 days per year, including bank holidays.

Holiday entitlement may vary slightly depending on your contract, but this will always be clearly explained before you join the business.

Most roles are Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, although some positions require earlier start times.

Everyone also works one Saturday morning each month, and overtime opportunities are available in many departments when business demands require it.

We’re not a corporate office with suits and boardrooms.

We’re a genuine, hardworking vehicle recycling business where everyone rolls up their sleeves and gets stuck in.

Our head office sits alongside our licensed scrapyard, so the environment is fast-paced, down-to-earth and constantly changing.

We value honesty, teamwork and people who enjoy solving problems and getting things done.

No two days are the same. Every day brings different vehicles, customers and challenges, which keeps the work varied and interesting.

Even if you’re based in the office, you’ll regularly work alongside our yard team, drivers and management.

Everyone plays an important role, and we work together to keep the business moving forward.

Yard-based role: You will definitely get muddy most days.

Office-based role: Probably!

If you end up going into the yard for whatever reason, you will likely get muddy.

Our site is a real working scrapyard, so don’t be surprised if your shoes get a little muddy now and then.

Yes! We’re a dog-friendly workplace and have office dogs in both of our offices.

If you’re joining the team, you’ll need to be comfortable working around friendly dogs who are very much part of day-to-day life at Local Recycling Group.

Absolutely.

As a growing independent business, there are plenty of opportunities to develop your career.

We believe in promoting from within wherever possible and regularly invest in training and development.

Depending on your role, this could include forklift training, management courses, plant machinery qualifications, health and safety training and other professional development to help you grow with the business.

Yes. We operate a fully licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) and work to the highest industry standards.

We’re proud of our reputation for running an honest, professional and compliant vehicle recycling business, giving both our customers and employees confidence in the work we do every day.

We aim to review applications quickly and, where possible, contact successful candidates by the next working day.

Interview dates are often included within the job advert, so you’ll usually know when to keep yourself available before applying.

All applications are managed through Indeed, so interview invitations and updates will be sent via the Indeed platform.

Unless there’s a genuine reason why this isn’t possible, all interviews take place in person at our Darwen headquarters.

It depends on the role, and we’ll always make this clear within the job advert.

For many of our office-based positions, we’re happy to teach you the systems, processes and industry knowledge you’ll need.

Even experienced customer service or administration professionals will have plenty to learn about the vehicle recycling industry, so on-the-job learning is a big part of working here.

For yard-based roles, previous experience is usually essential. Many positions require existing qualifications or licences, such as NPORS, forklift licences or other plant machinery certifications, before you can be considered.

We also support our employees with additional training where it benefits both your career development and the needs of the business.

We ask all candidates to arrive on time, as late arrivals will not be interviewed.

Most interviews begin with a tour of our site, giving you the chance to see the business in action and learn more about what we do.

You’ll then have an interview with the relevant members of the team, which typically lasts between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on the role and how the conversation develops.

For office-based roles, there’s usually one interview followed by a practical task. This isn’t designed to catch you out; it’s simply a chance for us to see how you approach problems, communicate your thinking and complete work similar to what you’d be doing day to day.

For operational and yard-based roles, we may invite suitable candidates to complete a short paid trial, allowing both you and us to make sure the role is the right fit. The length of any trial will depend on the position.

Yes. We offer free on-site parking for all employees and visitors.

Yes. All required uniforms and personal protective equipment (PPE) are provided as standard for the role you’re carrying out.

If you’d like additional branded clothing or extra items, such as fleeces, hats or gilets, these can be purchased separately.

Absolutely.

If you don’t see a role that’s right for you, you’re welcome to send us your CV along with a short introduction explaining the type of role you’re interested in, your previous experience and why you’d like to work with Local Recycling Group.

As we’re a relatively small but growing business, we don’t always have vacancies available immediately.

While we can’t guarantee we’ll have a suitable opportunity, we’ll review your application and, if nothing is available, we’ll usually recommend keeping an eye on our Careers page and Indeed for future openings.

Skills and experience are important, but attitude matters just as much.

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Hard-working and reliable
  • Friendly with good communication skills
  • Happy working as part of a team
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment
  • Adaptable and willing to take on different tasks
  • Motivated to achieve targets and help the business grow
  • Prepared to support colleagues when needed

Above all, we want people who enjoy getting stuck in and contributing to the success of the whole team.

We’ve previously welcomed apprentices and work experience students into our office teams, particularly within marketing, customer service and administration.

These opportunities are designed to help people gain valuable workplace experience and begin their careers.

Any apprenticeship or work experience opportunities will be advertised on our Careers page and Indeed, so keep an eye on our latest vacancies if you’re interested.

Yes. If you believe you’re a good fit for more than one role, you’re welcome to apply for multiple vacancies through Indeed.

Just make sure each application reflects why you’re suitable for that specific position, as we’ll assess every application individually.
