Scrap Local’s heard from many Londoners looking to remove their old cars under the Transport for London scrappage scheme.
Made in response to London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), the scrappage scheme for cars is a grant designed to help low income motorists scrap polluting vehicles and transition to eco-friendly methods of transport.
In this guide, you can check whether you’re eligible for the grant and what you need to do to scrap your old set of wheels under TfL’s scrappage scheme for cars. We’ll even show you how to get a Certificate of Destruction (COD) with us!
You can only apply for the scrappage scheme for cars if you and your vehicle meet the following requirements.
You will be asked to prove whether you and your vehicle meet these requirements during the application process.
You can apply for the scrappage scheme for cars on TfL’s website.
If you scrap your old car or motorcycle under this scheme you could receive a grant of £1,000 – £2,000 to purchase a ULEZ compliant vehicle!
Here is the step by step process on how to apply for this scheme:
TfL claims that they process applications within 10 working days of receiving them. They will contact you to say whether you can scrap your car under the scrappage scheme or not.

During the application, you will be asked to upload documents about your vehicle and the benefits you receive. This is to ensure that you’re eligible for the ULEZ government grant.
You will need to provide clear photos, scans or screenshots of the following things:
You can upload these documents in a JPG, PNG or PDF format. You can even upload files from your phone!
Please make sure that your name and address are visible and that all documents are easy to read.
Once TfL has approved and authorised your application, you can scrap your car with an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).

If you’ve disposed of your vehicle under TfL’s scrappage scheme for cars, you will need to supply a photo of your Certificate of Destruction (COD).
You won’t be able to receive your grant without this document!
Scrap Local’s ATFs can provide you with a COD without any hassle. Typically it takes between 3-10 working days for this document to be issued.
Once you’ve received a COD from us, please upload a picture of it through the London Road User Charging (LRUC) account you created to submit your application for the scrappage scheme.
If you have yet to receive a COD from us, feel free to give us a call on 01706 577 574 and we’ll chase this up for you.
