How To Apply For TfL’s Scrappage Scheme For Cars

You can apply for the scrappage scheme for cars on TfL’s website.

If you scrap your old car or motorcycle under this scheme you could receive a grant of £1,000 – £2,000 to purchase a ULEZ compliant vehicle!

Here is the step by step process on how to apply for this scheme:

  1. Create a London Road User Charging account
  2. Check your eligibility
  3. Submit your online application

TfL claims that they process applications within 10 working days of receiving them. They will contact you to say whether you can scrap your car under the scrappage scheme or not.

What Proof Do You Need To Apply For The Scrappage Scheme?

During the application, you will be asked to upload documents about your vehicle and the benefits you receive. This is to ensure that you’re eligible for the ULEZ government grant.

You will need to provide clear photos, scans or screenshots of the following things:

  • Vehicle log book (V5C)
  • Current and up to date vehicle insurance certificate
  • Current and up to date MOT certificate
  • Most recent award letter or full Universal Credit service statement

You can upload these documents in a JPG, PNG or PDF format. You can even upload files from your phone!

Please make sure that your name and address are visible and that all documents are easy to read.

How Do I Scrap My Car Through The Scrappage Scheme?

Once TfL has approved and authorised your application, you can scrap your car with an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).

What Do I Do With My Certificate Of Destruction?

If you’ve disposed of your vehicle under TfL’s  scrappage scheme for cars, you will need to supply a photo of your Certificate of Destruction (COD).

You won’t be able to receive your grant without this document!
