The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, launched a scrappage scheme in January 2023 to reduce emissions and improve air quality in by encouraging the removal of older, polluting vehicles. This initiative supports eligible charities, sole traders, and micro businesses (with up to 10 employees) to replace vehicles that don’t meet the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) standards.
In the attempt to make London a cleaner, emission free city, the scrappage scheme offered grants to up to £9,500 for non-compliant vans and minibuses, depending on the replacement vehicle type.
The grant was available to scrap up to three older, high-emission vans or minibuses, helping businesses and charities transition to greener transport options.
The ULEZ expansion took effect on August 29th, making the emission zone London-wide, affecting more vehicles and requiring non-compliant vehicle owners to pay a daily charge.
Note: The scrappage scheme closed to new applications on September 7th, 2024.
Scrap Local received many calls regarding the ULEZ scrappage scheme and worked with Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF’s) to help vehicle owners scrap their vans in compliance with the grant requirements.
Our Official Partners are fully licensed Authorised Treatment Facilities and can issue Certificates of Destruction, which were required to claim the grant.
When you purchase your new vehicle, you must ensure you are eligible before assuming you will receive the payment.
The scrappage payment of up to £9,500 was paid directly by the Transport for London (TfL) as part of the government-backed initiative.
This is not the amount you will receive from Scrap Local, our partners or scrapyards on our directory.
However, you may receive a quote and payment on top of this grant from the scrap yard. This payment is separate and paid to you directly from the scrap dealer itself.
Most customers donate their van/car on scrappage schemes as payments may effect the amount payable via the grant.
With the London van and minibus scrappage scheme, you had to meet the following criteria:

In addition to the van and minibus scrappage scheme, the Mayor of London has also launched a car and motorcycle London scrappage scheme.
This scheme aims to help low income and disabled Londoners recycle purchase newer, greener vehicles if they scrap their older cars that don’t meet ULEZ standards.
The grants aren’t as high for cars and motorcycles but there are two payments available:
£1,000 to scrap a motorcycle or moped
£2,000 to scrap a car
The vehicle mustn’t meet the ULEZ emissions standard and can only be used against the purchase of a vehicle that does meet the standards.
The ULEZ scrappage scheme was launched in January 2023, and applications opened on January 30th, 2023.
The scheme closed to new applications on September 7th, 2024.
The scheme helped thousands of businesses and individuals switch to cleaner vehicles, improving air quality in London and reducing pollution-related health risks.
The scheme was open to micro-businesses (up to 10 employees), sole traders, small businesses, and registered charities that owned a non-compliant vehicle.
If you missed the deadline, you would need to check alternative vehicle funding options, as TfL is no longer accepting applications. You may still be able to sell your non-compliant vehicle or scrap it for a separate payment through Scrap Local.
The grant provided up to £9,500 for replacing a non-compliant van or minibus, depending on the replacement vehicle type. For cars, the maximum grant was £2000, and £1000 for motorcycles.
