London Scrappage scheme for vans and minibuses

The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, launched a scrappage scheme in January 2023 to reduce emissions and improve air quality in by encouraging the removal of older, polluting vehicles. This initiative supports eligible charities, sole traders, and micro businesses (with up to 10 employees) to replace vehicles that don’t meet the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) standards.

In the attempt to make London a cleaner, emission free city, the scrappage scheme offered grants to up to £9,500 for non-compliant vans and minibuses, depending on the replacement vehicle type.

The grant was available to scrap up to three older, high-emission vans or minibuses, helping businesses and charities transition to greener transport options.

The ULEZ expansion took effect on August 29th, making the emission zone London-wide, affecting more vehicles and requiring non-compliant vehicle owners to pay a daily charge.

Who was eligible for the London scrappage scheme?

  • Micro businesses (with up to 10 employees), small businesses, and sole traders.
  • Registered charities operating in London.
  • Vehicles had to be owned for at least 12 months before the scrappage scheme began in January 2023.
  • The vehicle must have been insured for business use, road taxed, and had a valid MOT.

Note: The scrappage scheme closed to new applications on September 7th, 2024.

How Can Scrap Local Help?

Scrap Local received many calls regarding the ULEZ scrappage scheme and worked with Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF’s) to help vehicle owners scrap their vans in compliance with the grant requirements.

Our Official Partners are fully licensed Authorised Treatment Facilities and can issue Certificates of Destruction, which were required to claim the grant.

When you purchase your new vehicle, you must ensure you are eligible before assuming you will receive the payment.

Who Pays The Van Scrappage Payment?

The scrappage payment of up to £9,500 was paid directly by the Transport for London (TfL) as part of the government-backed initiative.

This is not the amount you will receive from Scrap Local, our partners or scrapyards on our directory.

However, you may receive a quote and payment on top of this grant from the scrap yard. This payment is separate and paid to you directly from the scrap dealer itself.

Most customers donate their van/car on scrappage schemes as payments may effect the amount payable via the grant.
