How to scrap a car with a private plate

To sell a car for scrap or salvage with a private reg, you must first place the vehicle on retention.

You can do this in a variety of ways.

First, you will be required to provide the following:

  • V5C logbook
  • V778 retention document

Some eligibility requirements exist when trying to sell your scrap car and keep its private reg.

To be eligible, the vehicle must meet the following criteria:

  • It must be registered with DVLA in the UK.
  • It must be capable of moving on its power.
  • It must require an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate according to its type.
  • It must be available for inspection. DVLA will contact you if they need to inspect your vehicle.
  • It must have been taxed or had a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) in place continuously for the past five years.
  • If it has had a SORN in business for over five years, it must be taxed and have an MOT certificate.
  • If you have a historic (classic) vehicle, you will also need a current MOT certificate, even if your car is usually exempt from MOTs.

It’s important to note that the vehicle must have tax and an MOT!

How to place a private reg on retention

To place a vehicle reg on retention, you must do so with the DVLA.

This can be done online or by post.

Send Over Details By Post

You must fill out a v317 Retention document. And send this to the DVLA head office.

There is a cost of £80.

If you are not the registered keeper, then you will be required to complete via this method.
You must also include the following:

  • V317 Form – Called ‘transfer or retain a vehicle registration number.’
  • V5C logbook with the green slip with a completed V62 ‘application for a vehicle registration V5C.’
  • £80 vehicle reg transfer fee.

You will then be required to send over details to DVLA:

Retain Private Number Plate Online

To keep your private plate online, you must provide your V5C logbook details – Mainly the 11-digit reference number on the front.

Your number plate will be removed before you scrap or salvage a car. This is immediate and can also be assigned to another vehicle if required.

You must use the reference number provided.

Receiving a vehicle retention document

Once you have completed your application form, your original number will be reassigned to you.

The DVLA will then send you the following:

  • A new logbook
  • Original MOT
  • A V778 retention document if you are the registered keeper.

It’s important to note that DVLA will send the V778 retention document to the original owner if you are not the registered keeper.

If you want to use your private reg on another vehicle, put the original plate on the vehicle before driving.

You must also inform your insurance company of your private reg if in use.

Once you receive a vehicle retention document, you can prove your ownership of your private reg for ten years.

You will then be required to renew the right to use your private plate before the V778 expiration date.
