What Is The London Scrappage Scheme?

Launched on 30 January, the London Scrappage scheme is a new initiative by TfL and Mayor Sadiq Khan to provide a means to cleaner air and reduce pollution across London.

Currently, there is an Ultra-low emission zone (expanded in 2021) and a congestion zone.

The ULEZ will now be expanded in 2023 to cover additional areas across greater London, alongside support for a green transition through grants, public transport improvements, and increased charge points for electric vehicles.

How Does The Scrappage Scheme Work?

The scrappage scheme supports residents and businesses across Greater London.

Certain low-income residents, or those on disability benefits, will receive grant funding for scrapping cars, motorcycles and other vehicles with wheelchair access.

The £61 million we provided for scrappage associated with the existing ULEZ was provided entirely without government support in contrast to other UK cities

Apply For ULEZ Car and Motorcycle Scheme

You must complete a few things to apply for the ULEZ car and motorcycle scrappage scheme.

  1. Firstly, Ensure you meet the requirements for the grant. Applications are divided into two sub-schemes, depending on the vehicle type and applicant.
  2. You must also reside within the 32 boroughs of Greater London.
  3. Importantly, if you have received a grant payment under the previous ULEZ london scrappage scheme, your application will not be able to apply to the latest ULEZ scrappage scheme grant.

London Scrappage Scheme Grant Payment Options

If you are successful, you’ll be informed by the Tfl. Payment for the ULEZ scrappage scheme grant can come in many forms. The eight different types of grant payment options are below.

  • Specific options are not equal to others! For example, the opportunity to scrap a car with 2 or 1 adult bus and tram passes for the year is of higher value. This has been made to push transport across London, with talks of investment in the current London bus network.
  • You can receive your grant funding as a one-off payment, a reduced grant payment with one or two bus/tram passes.
  • The scrappage scheme with a bus and tram pass is provided in the form of an Oyster card, and depending on the type of grant payment, you can receive upwards of 2 keys for yourself and someone you live with.

With so many options, it’s essential to consider what option you could choose.

As a resident, you may want to use the single grant payment to invest in a renewable, cleaner electric vehicle. Alternatively, you could retrofit your existing vehicle to meet emission standards without breaking the bank.

If you work and study within greater London, choosing the grant payment whereby you receive a bus or tram pass for the year is also very sustainable. Either way, regardless of what type of grant payment you choose, reflecting upon your future requirements for transport is of significant importance.
