What happens if i can't find my logbook?
If you can’t find your logbook, don’t worry!
We can still scrap the vehicle without the logbook, provided you have a working key and photo ID.

Please Note:
it is your responsibility to notify the DVLA the vehicle has been scrapped, since you are the registered keeper of the vehicle.
Do I need to be present for collection?
Although someone has to be present to hand over the logbook and the keys, it doesn’t have to be you.
As long as the person handing over the vehicle has photo ID and is over 18, this is fine.
How do I get paid for my vehicle?
We make payment runs daily between 5pm – 7pm Monday through Friday.
Funds typically clear into your bank no later than the following business day.

Please Note:
Drivers DO NOT make payments for vehicles and we do not offer instant payments.
This is because payments can always take up to 2 hours to clear and we don’t have the capacity to have our drivers wait for funds to clear.
Also, due to the sheer volume of vehicles our network collects on a nationwide basis it would be difficult to facilitate instant payments.
Will the driver let me know they're on their way in advance?
Yes, infact our drivers are instructed to call you 1 hour before they’re setting off.
If you don’t answer the phone, they will move on and try again after their next job.
Please make sure you are available by phone during your collection slot.

To keep everyone else’s slot on schedule, please ensure you have everything you need in advance of collection.
Why do you need to call me after I’ve booked?
After you’ve submitted your booking, a member of the team will give you a call from “Scrap Local” to confirm a few details about your vehicle.
This call allows us to:
- Confirm the condition of your vehicle.
- Check a few details to make sure we’ve given you the most accurate quote possible.
- Arrange collection if needed.
- Take your bank details securely so your payment can be processed on time.
Even if you’ve already entered information on the booking form, we’ll still ask some of these questions to make sure everything is correct.
We know it can be frustrating to repeat yourself, but we verbally verify your vehicle details to ensure you are being paid the absolute best and most accurate price.
Please answer these questions to the best of your ability during our call, even if you already filled them out in the online form.
When and how will I be paid?
Scrap Local does not pay cash and you will not be paid at the time of collection.
- No Cash Payments: Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, it is illegal to pay cash for scrap cars. Therefore, our drivers cannot pay you at the time of collection.
- Payment Method: We take your bank details securely over the phone during our initial callback, or if you prefer, we can send you a secure link to input them yourself.
- Payment Timing: All collection payments are processed in our daily payment runs, which take place between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Your funds will clear no later than the following working day.

What time will my vehicle be collected?
We offer two collection windows:
- Morning: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
- Afternoon: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Please note that we operate within these windows and cannot provide specific time slots.
If you can’t be there yourself, someone else can hand over the vehicle as long as they:
- Are 18 or over
- Have a valid photo ID (driving licence or passport)
- Have the vehicle keys
- Can hand over the V5C logbook (if available)

What Photo ID do I need to provide?
To comply with the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 and prevent fraud, the person handing over the vehicle must show a physical, in-date photo ID to the driver at the time of collection so they can take a picture of it.
We only accept:
- A valid UK or international driving licence
- A valid passport
Note: No other forms of ID (such as bus passes or work badges) will be accepted.
Our driver is required to take a photograph of your ID as part of the legal checks required under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, helping prevent fraud and ensuring the vehicle is being disposed of legally.
Do I have alloy wheels or steel wheels?
The type of wheels on your vehicle directly affects its scrap value, so we will ask you to confirm what you have.
Here is how to tell the difference:
Steel Wheels:
- These are typically plain, heavy black or grey metal wheels.
- They are often covered by plastic wheel trims (hubcaps) (which can be popped off).
- Are made from pressed steel.
- Are worth less than alloy wheels.
Alloy Wheels:
- These are made from lighter aluminium and do not use plastic hubcaps.
- Usually have a more decorative design with multiple spokes.
- Are made from aluminium alloy.
- Increase the value of your vehicle.
If you’re unsure, simply let us know and, if possible, send us a few photos. We’ll happily identify them for you.
How is the value of my vehicle calculated?
Scrap Local is a licensed scrapyard, so the majority of vehicles are valued primarily on their weight and the current market price of scrap metal.
This means that factors such as:
- Age
- Mileage
- Optional extras
- Previous purchase price
don’t usually affect your scrap value.
- Exceptions for Salvage: We do offer higher salvage prices for select vehicles under 10 years old that are still in good condition. However, if your car is older or damaged, it will be valued at standard scrap weight rates. If your vehicle qualifies, we’ll let you know during your quotation.

What is a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) and will I get one?
A Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is an official DVLA document confirming that an authorised treatment facility has permanently destroyed your vehicle. Your vehicle has been responsibly recycled and crushed.
- When you need one: If you need to prove that your car has been destroyed. They are often required if your car is an insurance write-off, or if you are applying for a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) scrappage grant.
- When you won’t get one: If you accept a higher salvage price for your car (meaning it is being bought to be repaired or broken for parts, not scrapped immediately), you will not receive a CoD.
- Delivery: If applicable, your CoD will be emailed to you within 7 days of collection.
Do I need to notify the DVLA?
Yes, it is your legal responsibility to inform the DVLA that you no longer own the vehicle to avoid future fines.
You should do this after your vehicle has been collected, not before.
- How to do it: You can notify them instantly online via the Gov.uk website using the 11-digit reference number from your V5C logbook, or by posting the relevant slip to the DVLA.
Notifying the DVLA ensures you are no longer responsible for the vehicle and helps prevent future tax, parking or speeding fines being sent to you.
What do I need to have ready at the time of collection?
To make collection as smooth as possible, please have the following ready:
- Vehicle keys (if available)
- V5C logbook (if available)
- Valid photo ID
- Someone aged 18 or over present to hand over the vehicle
The photo ID must belong to the person handing the vehicle over.
Don’t worry if you don’t have the V5C logbook. We can still collect your vehicle as long as you have the keys.
Likewise, if you’ve lost the logbook but still have the keys, collection can usually go ahead.
What happens if I've lost the vehicle’s keys?
We can still collect vehicles without keys.
However, if we cannot gain access to the vehicle, it may be necessary for our recovery driver to break a window in order to release the steering lock or access the vehicle.
If this is required, you will be responsible for cleaning up any broken glass left behind after collection.
If you’ve lost your keys, please let us know during our confirmation call so we can make the appropriate arrangements before collection.
Can someone else hand the car over if I'm not available?
If you cannot be there personally, anyone else can stand in for you as long as they are over 18 years old and can provide their own valid photo ID, along with the vehicle’s keys and logbook.
