The 2021 ULEZ Extension

London’s ultra-low emission zone, otherwise known as ULEZ, will be expanding on the 25th October 2021. The ULEZ will grow by a factor of 18 and will cover most of London’s streets.

Alongside changes to London’s congestion charges, which will be introduced later this year, the ULEZ extension enforces emission standards by setting a daily tariff for motorists to enter and drive in the City of London.

As the government implements tighter standards for vehicle emissions in inner-city areas, it’s important for Londoners to know where they stand whilst driving their petrol or diesel vehicle through the ULEZ.

ULEZ Extension Start Date

The ULEZ extension began on the 25th of October 2021 and will run 24 hours a day for 7 days a week.

As part of the London congestion zone charge, the ULEZ extension will run every year except for Christmas.

ULEZ Extension Vehicle Checker

Certain low emitting cars such as electric vehicles are exempt from paying any ULEZ extension charges.

Petrol cars that were manufactured in 2009 comply with Euro 5 standards and are also exempt from paying any ULEZ extension charges.

Incompatible cars can be defined as:

  • Cars, vans, and motorcycles under 3 tonnes.
  • Specialist vehicles (up to 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to 5 tonnes). These vehicles will need to meet the ULEZ emission standards or risk being charged £12.50
  • a day when driving through the revised 2021 ULEZ extension.

Further information on whether your vehicle will be impacted by the expanded ULEZ can be found below!

In central London, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has already helped cut toxic roadside nitrogen dioxide pollution by nearly half and led to reductions that are five times greater than the national average. But the pollution isn’t just a central London problem

2021 ULEZ Extension Map

The ULEZ extension currently covers the same region as the central London congestion zone. However, the zone will expand across the City of London and will be set around (but will not include) the South and North circular roads.

  • Key areas affected by the ULEZ extension include Halloway, Stratford, Harringay, Wood Green and Poplar.
  • Other areas in the ULEZ extension include Barnes, Motorola, Chiswick, East Sheen, North Richmond and Kew.
  • Key corridors covered by the ULEZ extension include the A10, A2, A23 and A41.
  • The scheme is being introduced in Chiswick as air pollution limits are still being exceeded in the expansion zone.
  • Poor air quality remains the biggest environmental risk to the health of Londoners.

The ULEZ extension will cover many new areas and it’s important to understand whether your vehicle will be impacted. To find out what you will need to pay to enter the ULEZ, please enter your postcode through the TFL postcode checker linked below.

It is estimated that 100,000 cars, 35,000 vans, and 3,000 lorries could be affected by the expanded zone with tighter standards every day.

ULEZ Extension Charges

ULEZ charges are paid in conjunction with daily london congestion charges so it’s important to understand how much you’ll be paying to drive your vehicle in the zone.

  • Vehicles under 2.5 tonnes

Cars, motorcycles, and vans will pay a daily ULEZ extension charge of £12.50 alongside a £15 congestion charge.

  • Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes

Lorries and coaches will pay £100 to enter the ULEZ extension.

‘We recognise the important role that historic vehicles play in preserving London’s culture and history and their relatively low impact on pollution due to their small numbers. Following consultation it was agreed that vehicles in the 40-year rolling vehicle tax exemption sector for classic vehicles will be exempt from the ULEZ standards and charges.’

Classic Cars And The ULEZ Extension

Many classic car enthusiasts and classic car owners were worried about the 2021 ULEZ extension and its impact on classic cars.

Thankfully, owners have breathed a sigh of relief as classic cars will not be impacted by the ULEZ charge since being classed as historic vehicles.
Of course, you can only be eligible if your vehicle is older than 40 years and has its tax class registered as a historic vehicle.

Unfortunately, many classic cars have since fallen under the despair of the recent MOT changes. Under new regulations, classic vehicles must meet the new standards introduced otherwise the prospect of driving their classic vehicle across the ULEZ may be short-lived.

It’s important to note that the ULEZ extension will run from 00:00am to 24:00pm. Cars aren’t required to pay twice to enter the expanded ULEZ.

If your vehicle is parked and remains stationary in the ULEZ extension, then you will not be required to pay a fee. You can pay to drive in London’s ULEZ online.

  • What areas are in the ULEZ extension?

From the 25th October 2021, the ULEZ will expand from central London to create a single, larger zone. It will run up to, but not include, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205).

    • Further missed payments will lead to a charge certificate which carries a maximum fine of £240.
