Changes To E10 Fuel

From September 2021 normal octane (95) petrol in the UK will now become E10. This will be coming into effect in early 2022 for the motorists of Northern Ireland.

In short, a large number of vehicles manufactured before 2011 will be impacted by the fuel change.

Our guide on the recent E10 fuel changes breaks down what key vehicles are affected, the impact to classic cars as well as your options if your vehicle doesn’t meet E10 fuel requirements.

What Is E10 Fuel?

E10 fuel is a biofuel that contains less carbon and has a higher amount of renewable ethanol. Producing fewer CO2 emissions, the introduction of E10 fuel as standard will help the UK in the nation’s efforts to tackle climate change.

Following Europe, the US and Australia, E10 fuel has previously been used in the UK to test the performance and resistance of newly manufactured cars since 2015.

During the manufacturing process for E10, renewable ethanol is blended with fossil fuel-based petrol. Valuable by-products such as animal feed and stored CO2 are also produced.

The introduction of E10 petrol at UK forecourts could cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes a year – the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road, or all the cars in North Yorkshire

Cars Incompatible With E10 Fuel

Specific vehicle makes and models that are built before 2011 will have a high risk of damage as well as voided insurance if they use E10 petrol.

These incompatible cars are unable to use super unleaded petrol mainly because the condensation of ethanol can corrode the fuel pump and tank.

Since over a million vehicles on British roads will be affected by the E10 fuel changes, it’s important to know if your vehicle is at risk.

There are certain vehicles that are highly incompatible with E10 which you should be aware of. The RAC have compiled a list of the top 10 incompatible cars and an estimate of how many there are on UK roads. These include:

  1. Volkswagen Golf – 28,066
  2. MG MGB – 20,890
  3.  Mazda MX-5 – 15,785
  4. Nissan Micra – 15,785
  5. Morris Minor – 12,796
  6. Rover 25 – 9,879
  7. MG MGF –  9,352
  8. Ford Escort –  8,947
  9. Rover Mini – 7,614
  10. MG TF – 7,568

You can check whether your vehicle is compatible with the new E10 petrol by using the gov.uk vehicle checker.

E10 Fuel Changes On Classic Cars

Most cars and motorcycles that have been produced since the late 1990s have been approved by certain vehicle manufacturers as being compatible with E10 petrol.

However, recent insight from independent sources has stressed that certain vehicles are not compatible. These include:

Alongside changes to VED tax, these vehicles will need expensive upgrades to meet new standards. These include:

    • Fuel Hoses
    • Fuel Filters
    • Fuel Injectors
    • Fuel Pumps

Expensive costs for labour and car parts mean many classic and salvage vehicles are no longer viable for motorists.

If classic car owners continue to use E5 petrol rather than updating their vehicle, they may pay an extra £43 per year for fuel alone

From September 2021 the previous standard 95 octane petrol grade is changing to renewable ethanol or E10. This is the case for Northern Ireland in 2022.

The fuel change only applies to petrol vehicles.

If your vehicle is not listed in the E10 fuel vehicle checker, then you can still continue to use E5 petrol.

If you add E10 petrol into your vehicle and it isn’t compatible, you just need to add E5 (97+Octane) next time you fuel up.

Using a tank of E10 petrol shouldn’t cause major damage so you won’t have to drain the tank.

However, prolonged use of E10 fuel will cause major problems to your vehicle and in some instances will void your insurance.

Following a report from the RAC, the most incompatible cars for E10 fuel include:

  1. Volkswagen Golf
  2. MG MCB
  3. Mazda MX-5
  4. Nissan Micra
  5. Morris Minor
  6. Rover 25
  7. MG MGF
  8. Ford Escort
  9. Rover Mini
  10. MG TF

Vehicles built before 2011 will be affected by the E10 fuel change. Moreover, classic vehicles manufactured in the 1990s and many cars and mopeds built in the 2000s will also be affected.

Vehicles are mainly affected due to the fuel tank, fuel injector and fuel pump used from this period.

Check your vehicle compatibility using the government vehicle checker tool.
